The pre-term presidential elections that are being held today in the republic of Abkhazia were declared valid, as almost 62 per cent of voters had cast their ballots by 20:00 Moscow Time.
According to Abkhaz law, elections are valid if more than half of voters take part in the polls, RIA Novosti reports.
Altogether there are 143,000 voters, 178 polling stations and 35 electoral districts in Abkhazia.
The pre-term presidential elections in Abkhazia are being held due to former president Sergey Bagapsh's death. Three people are in the running for the presidency. They are acting president Alexander Ankvab, prime minister Sergei Shamba and opposition leader Raul Khadzhimba.
