Georgy Poltavchenko becomes governor of St. Petersburg

Georgy Poltavchenko has become the governor of Saint-Petersburg,
receiving 37 votes for, with 5 abstentions, RBC reports.


The United Russia Party proposed three candidates for the position:
Vice-Governor Mikhail Oseyevsky, Speaker of the Legislative Council of
St. Petersburg Vadim Tyulpanov and Poltavchenko. Russian President
Dmitry Medvedev recommended Poltavchenko on August 30.


Poltavchenko was born in Baku on February 23, 1953. He graduated from
the Leningrad School of Mathematics and Physics N211, then the
Leningrad Institute for Aviation Engineering in four years as a
mechanical engineer for space engineering medicine. He became head of
the KGB directorate for state security in Vyborg.


Poltavchenko became member of the Leningrad Regional Council in 1990
and became head of the Directorate of the Federal Tax Police of St.
Petersburg after leaving the KGB. He was presidential representative
to the Leningrad Region from July 1999 to January 2000.


Poltavchenko was appointed as the Acting Governor of St. Petersburg by
President Medvedev on August 22. Former Governor Valentina Matviyenko
will take part in elections to the Federal Council.
