A US-NATO radar for anti-missile defenses will be installed at the
military base of Piridzhlik in the city of Diyarbakyr in Turkey, Trend
reports.
The US used the base until 1998. A spokesman for the Turkish Foreign
Ministry, Seljuk Unal, said on Friday that a radar would be installed
in Turkey. He added that such a decision had been made at the NATO
summit in Lisbon.
The radar system installation will have 4 phases. The first includes
Aegis naval systems with the AN/TPY-2 radar. Radars will be installed
to intercept missile threats to Europe. This phase is concluded in
2011.
The second phase involves tests of the SM-3 modified interceptors with
a higher range of sensors. This phase ends in 2015.
The third phase will end in 2018. It involves modification of the SM-3.
The fourth phase will end in 2020. More SM-3s will be installed for
defense against missile threats to the USA.
