Yerevan welcomes EU efforts in settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said on Wednesday.
Philippe Lefort, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and
the Georgian Crisis, said that the world will not allow force to be
used to solve the conflict. He noted that solution of conflicts is the
shortest path to EU association.
Lefort said that the OSCE Minsk Group mediates the negotiation process
within the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The EU will
provide additional support in the issue.
The South Caucasus has great economic and cultural potential in the
region to be developed, the representative said. He said that the
South Caucasus is significant for realization of various joint
projects. The region connects Europe and Asian-Pacific states.
Philipp Lefort was appointed on August 26 and took office on September
1. He replaces Pier Morel (EU Ambassador to Central Asia) and Peter
Semnebi (UE Ambassador to South Caucasus). Lefort will stay in office
until June 30, 2012. He will support conflict settlement with the
coordination of the UN, the OSCE and the Minsk Group.
