A group of Armenian diplomats headed by Foreign Minister Armen
Kirakosyan has met a high-ranking official of the Israeli Foreign
Ministry, Pinkhas Avivi.
Avivi was the former Israeli Ambassador to Turkey in 2003-2007. He is
currently supervising links with the CIS and Eastern Europe. The
official is obviously the best candidate for negotiations between
Israel and Armenia for his advanced studies of the South Caucasus.
The meeting is an extension of the telephone conversation between
Kirakosyan and his Israeli counterpart Dani Ayalon. Armenia expressed
discontent with the conversation, despite its friendly nature. Ayalon
avoided use of the term “Armenian genocide of 1915”, preferring to say
“tragedy of 1915”.
He denied the Armenian belief that Israel refuses to recognise the
genocide to please Turkey. Concerning Azerbaijan, Israeli Foreign
Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that their cooperation model is a good
example for relations with other Islamic states.
Ayalon noted that Israel is interested in friendly ties with all South
Caucasian states and supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group to
resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
There are no details about the negotiations of Avivi and Armenian
diplomats. There has been no progress in controversial moments between
the two states yet.
