Georgian president speaks at UN General Assembly

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has made a speech at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly, Georgia Online reports.

He reminded those gathered that Russia is not willing to hold a dialogue with Georgia. The president noted that 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of the USSR's collapse and the end of the Cold War. He mentioned reforms in Georgia.

Saakashvili believes that terrorism and extremism cannot be fought with force alone. They will only be destroyed when freedom, democracy and prosperity dominate. The Georgian president offered to share the experience of his country. He reminded those present that all police officers were dismissed after the Rose Revolution. Nonetheless, the crime level started dropping, despite the lack of police enforcement, for three months, because people had a feeling of responsibility for the country.

Saakashvili warned that Tunisia, Egypt and Libya would soon face new problems and the success of their revolutions would depend on the reform process.
