Russia says Syrian “threats” to Israel are provocation

Threats against Israel ascribed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are a provocation and an act of information war, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, RIA Novosti reports.

The Department for Information and Press of the ministry believes that there is interest in besmirching the image of Syria in the eyes of the world community, in order to intervene in the country.

The Russian ministry says that such actions complicate any resolution of the Syrian crisis and a transformation to democracy and stability.

The Syrian Ambassador to Russia, Riad Haddad, had a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov. They noted the negative role of Arab and international media perverting information about events in Syria. The ambassador thanked Russia for its support at the UN Security Council in preventing the passing of a resolution against Syria.

Bogdanov confirmed Russia’s support for no intervention in Syria and the halting of all violent acts.
Syrian anti-government protests started in Deraa in mid-March and spread to other regions. The UN says over 2,700 people have died, the Syrian authorities say 1,500, 800 of whom were law-enforcers. The opposition demands that President Bashar al-Assad resign and the start of political reforms. The USA and EU urged Assad to leave office.

NATO head Anders Fogh Rasmussen said earlier that the alliance does not plan any intervention in Syria.
