Russia has confirmed its full support for Abkhazia, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said after talks with his Abkhaz counterpart Alexander Ankvab.
The presidents discussed economic cooperation. Medvedev added that trade turnover must be balanced and needs to double. The two states have over 60 deals.
President Ankvab said that Abkhazia considers Russia to be a strategic partner and plans to continue strengthening ties, despite obstacles created by some European states.
Larisa Tsvizhby, PhD in History, Assistant Professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities and Chief Specialist of the Russian State University of Military-Historic Archives, says that Ankvab made his first visit to Russia for a reason. Russia is the closest, largest and friendliest neighbor of Abkhazia. The main goal of the visit is to confirm agreements reached and support their development. This mainly regards the military alliance and border protection, especially the Georgian border.
