Russia urges talks between Syrian opposition and the country's president, Bashar al-Assad. Moscow also says it's ready to serve as a mediator. According to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mikhail Bogdanov, representatives of the opposition will arrive in Moscow on October 11, RIA Novosti reports on Sunday.
On Tuesday Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution calling on the Syrian regime to immediately stop using violence against protesters or face "targeted measures."
The draft resolution, sponsored by France with Britain, Germany and Portugal, was supported by nine out of 15 Security Council member states. Four others - Brazil, India, South Africa and Lebanon - abstained.
