Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s party, Civic Platform, has won the parliamentary polls, Vedomosti reports.
His opponent, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the conservative Law and Justice party, admitted defeat. Exit polls say the first 15% of polling stations gave Tusk 39.6% of the vote, exceeding Kaczynski’s by 10%. Official results will be announced today. Tusk’s coalition will include the Peasants’ Party (8%).
Civic Platform was the first Polish party to win the elections twice in a row since the fall of the communist regime in 1989. Tusk has headed the government since 2007. Poland is the only EU state that has avoided economic recession. The GDP growth forecasts are for 4%.
