US Senate receives document from Atlantic Council for Georgia

The US Senate has had a presentation of a document passed by the Atlantic Council on Georgia, Georgia Online reports.

It is an analytical document. The working group consists of Linds Graam and Jin Shakhin. The group consists of Republicans and Democrats.

Graam pointed out the border problems of Georgia, its ties with Russia and hopes that the US would support it. The US can help Georgia in the economy and the free trade deal proves this point. Georgia must improve the role of its parliament, the independence of the courts, freedom of media and support a competitive climate.

Shakhin emphasised the parliamentary polls of 2012 and presidential polls of 2013 as indicators of Georgian democracy.

Vice-President of the Atlantic Council Daimon Wilson noted that the US needs to support Georgia in holding democratic elections.

Georgian Ambassador to Washington Temur Yakobashvili believes that the recommendations are critical, but they are important because they come from friends. Some points in the document are unrealistic because steps have already been taken. Laws have already been passed on the media and elections.
