The UN General Assembly will on Friday select five new temporary members of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013. Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovenia are bidding for a spot, Armenia Today reports.
Azerbaijan has never been a member of the UN Security Council. Hungary has been twice (in 1968-1969, 1992-1993), Slovenia once in 1998-1999.
Kyrgyzstan, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo want the sports of the African and Asian-Pacific states. This time African states get two seats, Asian – one.
Mauritania, Morocco and Togo will bid for the remaining two sports. Mauritania and Togo have been members of the Security Council once, Morocco – twice.
Guatemala may take a spot of Latin America.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria end their terms of office at the UN Security Council on December 31.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 members. UK, China, France, Russia and the USA are permanent members. Other members are elected once in two years. Five of them are replaced annually.
