Azerbaijan has become a temporary member of the UN Security Council for the first time. Slovenian Foreign Minister Samuel Zbogar withdrew his state's candidature. Azerbaijan received 116 votes, Slovenia – 77.
The last round of votes resulted in 155 states voting for Azerbaijan, 24 abstaining and 13 more voting for Slovenia. Although Azerbaijan failed to receive the necessary 129 votes.
Elections to the UN Security Council for 2012-2013 continued at the headquarters in New York on Monday.
Hungary, the third state from Eastern Europe, failed to obtain enough votes. Azerbaijan and Slovenia failed to gain enough votes as well. Voting was postponed till October 24.
Guatemala, Morocco, Togo and Pakistan became temporary members of the UN Security Council.
The UN consists of 5 permanent members (USA, Russia, UK, France and China) and 10 temporary members elected for 2 years, according to article 23 of the UN Charter. They lack the power of veto.
All the nine candidates had been members of the Security Council before, apart from Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Guatemala.
