Syria withdraws ambassador from USA in response

Syria has withdrawn its Ambassador Imad Moustapha from the USA in response to the same actions by Washington, a spokesman for the Syrian embassy in the US, Roua Shurbaji, said, RIA Novosti reports.

The US said on Monday that Damascus had no plans to withdraw the ambassador.

The Syrian embassy has not commented on the initiative.

US Ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, was withdrawn for his own safety. The Syrian authorities accuse him of interfering in the state’s internal affairs. Damascus expressed outrage at his visit to Khama, which was hit by disorders in July 2011. A crowd threw tomatoes, eggs and stones at the US embassy.

The US diplomat visited Jasem in late August, despite the Syrian Foreign Ministry banning such visits.
President Bashar Assad’s supporters attacked Ford in Damascus on September 29 by throwing tomatoes and eggs at him.

Protests in Syria have been ongoing for over half a year. They started in Dera’a in mid-March and spread to other regions. The UN says that over 3,000 people have died. Syrian authorities say 1,500 died from both sides, 1,100 of them were law enforcers. The opposition demands reforms and the resignation of President Bashar Assad. The US and the EU demand Assad'[s resignation.
