40% of the electorate, that is 1,437,897 electors, have taken part in the Georgian regional elections three hours before polling stations are closed, RIA Novosti reports.
Local authorities (sakrebulo) and the mayor of Tbilisi are being elected today, as well as some parliamentary seats that became empty earlier and to which new deputies are now being re-elected.
The elections are considered to be a 'dry run' before the parliamentary and presidental elections in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
There is no voter turnout threshold, but the number of voters is of great importance, as it shows the level of trust of the electorate in the electoral system.
