Traditional media written off too soon – FEAM expert

Constantine Simonov, Director General of the Fund for National Energy Security of Russia, an expert at the Sixth Forum of European and Asian Media (FEAM-2011), said that it is too early to write off traditional media forms because new media still raise doubts about their quality of content.

The expert noted that second wave of economic recession is rather good news for media because it will raise interests in information and traditional media sources would be able to strengthen their positions, RIA Novosti cites Simonov as saying.

Bloggers and social networks challenge traditional media. The main problem is that many media sources are interested in forming new platforms and forms of bringing information. Simonov noted that when people speak about new media they mean a new form for bringing information. The crisis of traditional media has a different nature.

Content is a problem. It is limited as well, Simonov explains. This causes doubts on whether new media will have a chance for development, greater interest to information. He expressed criticism of social networks and bloggers, in terms of quality.

Simonov believes that with improvement of information carriers, the society will be less informed. People are misinformed, new media bring chaos without giving any new content. The expert added that the crisis is a chance for traditional media to prove that they have not been lost and show high-quality content.
