Russian president wants dialogue, not confrontation – deputy defense minister

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s statement on counter-measures against the European missile shield without Russian involvement is a signal for dialogue in search for mutually acceptable solutions, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov says, RIA Novosti reports.

Antonov supervised the Russian delegation in signing the START-3 in April 2010.

Medvedev said on Wednesday that Russia would strengthen its strategic nuclear forces, equip them with advanced strategic ballistic missiles and high-efficiency systems, western and southern parts may be enforced with modern offensive units.

The statement was made in response to the US continuing realization of the European anti-missile program despite negotiations with Russia. The deputy minister reminded about conclusion of negotiations of the US with Spain, Romania and Poland. He added that Russia is aware of a US vessel in the Black Sea. Further prospects are unclear, Antonov concludes.
