EU to expand sanctions against Iran, Syria and Belarus

Foreign ministers of 27 EU states want to expand sanctions in Brussels against Iran, Syria and Belarus, RIA Novosti reports.


The EU is expected to introduce limitations for 179 officials and institutions as a measure against the Iranian nuclear program.


The tenth package of sanctions is to be passed against Syria where clashes between opposition and regime of President Bashar Assad continue for over 8 months. Sanctions will affect a set of financial, banking and energy subjects, including individuals and institutions.


Concerning Belarus, the foreign ministers offered to expand the list of Belarusian officials banned from visiting the EU with their accounts frozen for persecuting opposition and the civil society. 245 Belarusian officials are currently affected by the EU sanctions.


Another topic for discussion is the situation in Kosovo, Afghanistan and settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
