Syria has announced counter-measures against new sanctions of the EU and Turkey. The state has halted its membership in the Mediterranean Union, a regional alliance of 27 EU states and 16 Mediterranean. Damascus has boycotted activities of the forum until the sanctions are lifted, RBC reports.
Syria has halted the free trade deal with Turkey, passed in 2007. The Syrian government took other measures to neutralize Turkish sanctions.
Turkey announced financial-economic sanctions against Syria on November 30. One of their effects is freezing loans for realization of infrastructure construction in Syria by the Turkish Export-Import Bank, halt of cooperation between the Syrian and Turkish Central Banks and freezing of accounts of Syrian government members in Turkey.
The EU passed additional sanctions against Syria by blacklisting additional 11 structures and 12 officials supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, who is blamed for suppressing anti-government protesters. The US Treasury added Assad’s uncle Muhammad Maklouf and Commander of the 4th Syrian Armored Division, Aus Aslan.
