Russia's embassy in Tehran has dismissed a report about the presence of the Russian ambassador at a gathering of foreign envoys in front of the British embassy in the Iranian capital, Press TV reports on Friday.
The Russian envoy to Tehran did not attend the gathering in front of the UK embassy, said the Russian embassy in a Thursday statement, Press TV cites IRNA.
It also said that Iran's Fars news agency on December 2d dismissed its earlier report about the Russian envoy's visit to an area in the vicinity of the British embassy in Tehran.
In an organized move, the ambassadors of 25 countries in Iran conducted a group visit to Qolhak Garden in the north of Tehran on December 1st, followed by another similar visit to the British embassy compound in downtown Tehran.
The visits followed angry protests by Iranian students outside the British embassy on November 29th, during which the protesters pulled down the British flag and demanded the swift expulsion of the British envoy.
The protest came after a Majlis ratification of a bill on November 27th, also approved by Iran's Guardian Council the following day, to downgrade the country's relations with the UK to the level of charge d'affaires and limit all economic and cultural collaboration with London to the minimum level.
On December 4th, a number of Iranian lawmakers called for a “triple urgency bill” to confront the 25 ambassadors who partook in the visit to the UK embassy in Tehran.
