European Court of Human Rights accepts interstate claim of Georgia against Russia

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has accepted the interstate lawsuit of Georgia against Russia, the press service of the court reports. According to the experts of Vestnik Kavkaza, the admissibility of the claim and its direction for further consideration does not mean that it will be followed by a trial procedure.

Georgia appealed to the Strasbourg Court on August 11, 2008. Tbilisi alleges a violation of a number of norms of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms by Russia during the conflict in August 2008 and thereafter.

This is the second interstate claim of Georgia to Russia in the ECHR. The first complaint was submitted on March 26, 2007 in connection with the "persecution of Georgian citizens in the Russian Federation."

On June 30, 2009 the court accepted the complaint of Georgia, and in early 2011 initiated an investigation. The final decision has not yet been rendered.
