Unrecognized Albanian authorities in Pristina may become topic for referendum in Kosovo

The Serbians of Kosovo plan to hold a referendum on not recognizing the Albanian authorities in Pristina, RIA Novosti reports.

The referendum is planned for February 15, when Serbia marks the Day of Statehood and Candlemas.
The decision to organize a referendum was made at a meeting of municipal heads in the Kosovan city of Zvechan. It was initiated based on the new agreement on freedom of movement of people and car transport between Kosovo and Central Serbia, which comes into force on December 26.

Serbians spoke out against the agreement, saying that the Kosovan authorities are violating their rights and refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the Albanian authorities in Kosovo. The most disputed point of the document is the obligation to pay insurance fees for vehicles when passing the administrative border of Serbia and Kosovo. The agreement was approved at talks between Belgrade and Pristina in Brussels.

The negotiations started in March 2011, mediated by European diplomat Robert Cooper to resolve civil problems and reach rapprochement in the region with the EU.
