Czech foreign minister thanks Russians for their condolences

The Czech Republic's foreign minister, Prince Karel Schwarzenberg, has thanked all the Russians who offered the Czech people their condolences after the recent death of former Czech president Vaclav Havel, Ekho Moskvy reports on Thursday.

Vaclav Havel has always paid special attention to Russia's developments, the minister underlined.

In December 2011 Vaclav Havel said he supported popular protests in Russia and demanded another vote for parliament, as the December 4 elections were unfair.

Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev said he mourned Havel's death and visited the Czech embassy to Moscow to present his condolences to the ambassador. Opposition leader Professor Grigory Yavlinsky was also among those who said they deplored Havel's death.

Protesters gathered on Sakharov Avenue in Moscow on December 24th also paid tribute to the former Czech president.

The Russian authorities did not comment on Havel's death.
