Russia's chief sanitary inspector against closing federal consumer service

Russian Chief Sanitary Inspector Gennady Onishenko says that closing the Federal Service for Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare violates state interests, RIA Novosti reports.

Russian Vice-Premier Dmitry Kozak and his working group proposed closing of the Federal Service for Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare and passing its functions to regional sanitary and epidemiological structures.

Onishenko sees two problems that may arise from closing his organization. The first problem is violation of state interests, in the sense that the government will lose control over chemical and biological security. It would not be able to react on possible outbreaks, whether natural or artificial.

The second problem is violation of interests of small and medium business. Entrepreneurs fear that passing authority of the Federal Service for Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare to regional structures would provoke red tape. It will end up with reduction of free freighting on the inner market, Onishenko believes.
