OSCE says Kazakh parliamentary polls 'undemocratic', CIS monitors disagree

Monitors of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) believe that Kazakh parliamentary polls violate “democratic principles”, RIA Novosti reports.

OSCE monitoring chief of Kazakh parliamentary polls, Joa Soares, said that the polls were well-prepared and held, in technical terms. He added that there were changes to support the second party entering the parliament. But there were no actually pluralistic elections, Soares says.

The OSCE mission monitored the previous elections too. It concluded that the elections had been unjust. Only one party entered the parliament.

CIS monitors considered the elections democratic, President Nursultan Nazarbayev said that the population had expressed support for his course.

Two more parties passed the 7% barrier. Nazarbayev’s Nur Otan got 80.74% of vote, Ak Zhol – 7.46%, communists – 7.2%.

CIS monitoring chief Vladimir Garkun said that the Kazakh parliamentary polls were open, clear and met the law requirements. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was also satisfied with the election process. The SCO called elections legitimate, free and open, meeting the national law, Interfax reports.
