Dolphins will protect US interests in the Strait of Hormuz, former Admiral Tim Kiting said, ITAR-TASS reports.
US experts believe that Iran may close the Strait of Hormuz, a naval route for oil transport. The Fifth US Fleet in Bahrain said that it would not allow naval freighting to be blocked.
US military sources say that, besides using heavy motorboats, Iran may lay mines in the area. US anonymous specialists say that they have been using dolphins for underwater operations for over 50 years. They can record underwater activities using cameras.
Animal protectors are concerned over the issue. The military say that animals are only detecting bombs and there are no risks for them. Dolphins can easily distinguish friends from foes and fulfill their goals.
The strait runs between Iran and Oman. It is one of the main transport routes for oil delivery from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq. Qatar exports its liquefied gas through the strait. US military vessels are constantly patrolling the area.
