Moldavian communists organize protests

The Moldavian opposition has started unsanctioned protests to demand the resignation of the government, Vladimir Voronin, a communist leader, said, ITAR-TASS reports.

The protesters demand the resignation of parliament and organization of fair democratic elections. Voronin noted that the communists support protests of all parties and organizations protecting the Constitution.

The communist leader said that they had been provoked by postponement of presidential polls with plans for a referendum in April. Voronin said that the parliament should have no prolongation of its terms of office and there should be no referendums on presidential polls in September.

The ruling coalition of Armenia had such referendum in 2010. The population was to decide on whether the state should return to nationwide presidential polls. The referendum failed due to low vote activity.

The political crisis remains since April 2009, when liberal opposition, upset with victory of the communists, blocked presidential polls for off-year elections. After a series of off-year elections, the communists ended up in opposition and the power taken by the Democratic, Liberal and Liberal-Democratic Parties. The state leader cannot be chosen for 2.5 years. He needs 61 out of 101 votes of MPs.
