Russian opposition demands Yavlinsky's registration as presidential candidate

Russian opposition groups that will take part in the February 4th rally are demanding the registration of Professor Grigory Yavlinsky as a presidential candidate, Ekho Moskvy reports on Tuesday.

The Central Electoral Commission announced today that it probably won't register Professor Yavlinsky's candidacy, saying that almost 25 per cent of signatures supporting his nomination were fake. The politician believes the decision is politically motivated.

Professor Yavlinsky, founder of the liberal Yabloko party, was seen as the only truly independent candidate to run for president this year.

The Central Electoral Commission's decision was condemned by many opposition parties, including the Communist Party and the unregistered People's Freedom Party.
