The UN Security Council will hold a closed session in New York at midnight today, RIA Novosti reports.
Spokesmen in Morocco will publish the resolution project made by Western and Arab states. It contains a call by the Arab League for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Muhammed al-Baradei, a former Egyptian head of the IAEA and liberal leader, refused to speak on behalf of the Arab League (LAS). Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil al-Arabi said that Baradei will represent the organization in controlling the political situation in Syria and settlement of the crisis, approved on January 22. But Baradei rejected the appointment, explaining that he lacks time for the authority.
The LAS head will visit New York to discuss the Arab plan for resolving the crisis in Syria at a meeting of the UN Security Council. The plan passes authority of Assad to his vice-president and forms the government basing on democratic elections with foreign observers involved.
Andrey Kazantsev, an expert of Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that Syria is no connected with the Gulf and lacks own natural resources. Minor oil supplies run through Syria (from Iraq). No war is expected with Syria because the world society is concerned over the nuclear program of Iran.
Disorders in Syria have been ongoing for 10 months. The UN said that over 5,000 people had been killed. The Syrian government says that over 2,000 servicemen and police officers have died. Damascus blames foreign forces for provoking the disorders.
