US wants Georgia to maintain democratic reforms

The US has urged Georgia to keep up with its democratic reforms and hold fair parliamentary polls, RIA Novosti cites Victoria Nuland, spokeswoman of the US State Department, as saying.

She said that US President Barack Obama met his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Saakashvili in the White House on Monday. The US expressed support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial unity, readiness to continue support and economic cooperation.

Some media reckoned that Saakashvili could violate the national laws and try to hold elections off-year, rather than in October 2012. Nuland was asked to comment on whether Saakashvili discussed the issue with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The spokeswoman gave a positive reply. She refused to compare the situation in Georgia and Russia, but noted that she supports democracy regardless of the country or its developments.

Nuland reminded that the US and Georgia will continue military and security cooperation. It is based on programs already realized. Military cooperation concerns training Georgian law enforcers and joint operations in Afghanistan only.
