Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov plans to meet US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the Munich Security Conference, RIA Novosti reports.
Victoria Nuland, a spokeswoman of the US State Department, said earlier that the diplomats had had no plans for a meeting. Lavrov noted on Thursday that he was always trying to use international forums as an opportunity for meetings. The European missile shield and the situation in Syria would be the main topics for discussions, should Lavrov and Clinton meet.
The US State Department said that when Lavrov had been to Australia a few days ago, Clinton had been trying to contact him to discuss the resolution of the UN Security Council on Syria.
Lavrov commented on the information saying that he had indeed received a phone call from the State Department requesting a negotiation with Clinton at any possible time. The minister had a very busy schedule in Sydney and offered to postpone the conversation to any upcoming opportunity.
Lavrov said he had not received any phone calls from the State Department since. He added that meetings are planned with the NATO secretary general and German diplomats in Munich.
