After the French Senate passed the bill on criminalization of denial of the Armenian Genocide, Turkey has started to impose sanctions against France as it previously warned. French planes are now forbidden from entering Turkish airspace, Times.am reports.
On 23 January the French Senate passed the bill on criminalization of genocide denial by 127 votes for and 86 against.
On 22 December 2011, it was adopted by the French National Assembly. The bill will impose a 45,000 euro fine and a year in prison for anyone in France who denies this crime against humanity. France has recognized the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust. No attempt has been made to deny the Jewish Holocaust, so the bill is about the Armenian Genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire on 1915.
After the bill was passed by the French National Assembly on 22 December, the Turkish Ambassador to France, Tahsin Burcuoğlu, was recalled. But after some time he was sent back and ordered to prevent the bill being passed by the Senate. He did not manage to do this either and now he has orders to gather signatures for an appeal.
