Turkey protests against separatism of Kurdistan

Turkish police arrested about 130 people suspected of links with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, RIA Novosti reports.

The PKK has been trying to achieve independence for Kurdistan in the south-east of Turkey for over 25 years and is recognized as a terrorist organization by the UN and EU, organizations Ankara is striving to join. The conflict has resulted in deaths of over 40,000 people.

Special services held operations in 9 Turkish cities, including Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, as part of an investigation of the Union of Kurdistan Communities.

The case was initiated at Diyarbakir in April 2009. Mayors of several south-eastern cities, representing the Peace and Democracy Party, are among the suspects. They are believed to be members of the PKK.
