Georgia seeks exception from new rules of stay for foreigners in Turkey

New rules for the stay of foreigners in Turkey also apply to citizens of Georgia, but negotiations on this matter with the Turkish side continue, Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said at a traditional briefing on Monday, Trend reports. Kalandadze said that Georgia and Turkey had signed an agreement on the simplification of visa regime, but after the new law was adopted new agreements should be made.

"The Georgian side believes that there is a legal uncertainty. Our position is that the adopted amendments are contrary to the bilateral international agreement, and documents need to be aligned with each other," Kalandadze said. Negotiations are being conducted between the Turkish and Georgian sides on this issue.

According to the amendments to the law, foreign citizens have the right to stay in Turkey for three months. After three months they are required to leave the country with the right to return in 90 days. The law came into force on 1 February.
