The Republican Party of Armenia has won in the elections to local self-government insitutions in Armenia, the chairman of the CEC, Tigran Mukuchyan, announced. According to the Electoral Code, elections to local self-government institutions must be held in Armenia four times a year. On February 12 regular elections took place in 40 communities and early elections in two other communities. Elections of heads of communities took place in 37 communities, and in three – of members of the Council of Elders, News-Armenia reports.
"According to preliminary results, acting heads of communities won in 35 out of 37 communities, 28 of them are members of the Republican Party, two – of the Prosperous Armenia party, five are independent candidates. Of the two community leaders, elected for the first time, one is a member of the Republican Party, another one – is an independent candidate," Mukuchyan told reporters on Monday. The head of the CEC noted that the elected representatives are mostly people from 40 to 60 years old. Mukuchyan also stressed that, according to preliminary data, two women have become heads of communities, and nine women - members of the Council of Elders. In Armenia today there are 932 communities - 871 rural and 61 urban.
