Yemeni president resigns

The former President of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh, has passed power to Abd Rabbuh Mansur Al-Hadi, RIA Novosti reports.

The ceremony was held at the presidential palace in Sana’a. Former Vice President Al-Hadi, the only candidate for the post, swore the oath on Saturday. The inauguration will be held in Yemen today.

Meanwhile, thousands of people in Yemen are protesting against the plan of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (CCASG), making the former president immune to prosecution. They were also provoked by his support for the new president.

People in Yemen have been protesting against Saleh since early February 2011. He was in control of the state for 34 years. Media report hundreds of people killed and thousands injured in protests.

According to the plan of the CCASG, Yemen held unscheduled presidential polls on February 21 to settle the crisis. Saleh signed the plan in November 2011. 80% of the population voted. Al-Hadi got 65% of the vote.
