Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s lifting of the visa regime for Russia on February 29 has brought results. 2,500 have experienced the new regime. Saakashvili said that Georgia is interested in good ties with neighbours.
Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Davida Jalagania expressed hope that the initiative would be approved by Russia.
Sergey Mikheyev, Director General of the Center for Political Conjuncture, told Vestnik Kavkaza that there will be no prospects of rapprochement between the two states with Saakashvili at power. Putin is unlikely to make concessions for Saakashvili due to unacceptable demands. Although some technical improvements between Moscow and Tbilisi in terms of commerce are possible, the expert concludes.
