The UN Development Program (UNDP) and the Georgian Ministry for Environment have rounded up the 8-year initiative in developing renewable energy production, Trend reports.
The program was worth $4.3 million and was financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The program resulted in construction and rehabilitation of three minor hydroelectric power plants in Georgia, technical assistance for five minor dams, formation of the renewable energy fund, opening of a special line of projects for geothermal water sources and circulation of Tbilisi, experienced by over 5,000 people.
Georgia exploits solar and hydro energy, geothermal sources, wind and biogas, Minister for Environment Gocha Khachidze said at a seminar.
The UNDP, private banks and investors organized a fund for renewable energy worth $5 million, managed by the German Development Bank. The UNDP cooperates with the Georgian Ministries for Environment, Energy and Natural Resources, Finances, Regional Development and Infrastructure.
The Tbilisi Mayor’s Office, local administration of Rachi, Kakheti and Samtskhe-Javakheti, banks and private companies assisted the project.
Sopo Kemkhadze, Deputy Chief of the UNDP mission in Georgia, said that the UNDP promotes development of complex approaches to the energy policy with account of priority developments. Georgia has excellent opportunities to exploit renewable energy sources to improve standards of living, business and industry, she says. The UNDP will continue supporting environmental protection in Georgia, the official concludes.
