Saudi Arabia cannot compensate Iranian oil

Saudi Arabia cannot fulfill oil contracts with Western states to compensate for a reduction of petroleum imports from Iran, a high-ranking spokesman of Aramco said today, ITAR-TASS reports.

The official noted that there was never a promise to compensate Iranian oil. Although there were assurances that any oil shortages would be fulfilled. Saudi Arabia does not want to be involved in political relations of the West and Iran.

Foreign ministers of 27 EU states met in Brussels on January 23 and approved the embargo on Iranian oil exports. The new package of sanctions includes a gradual ban on imports of petroleum from Iran. The embargo will come into full force on July 1. Greece and Spain, the main European purchasers of Iranian oil, have problems in finding alternate sources of petroleum.
