Azerbaijani Defense Minister General-Colonel Safar Abiyev visited Iran and met President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Iranian president called ties with Azerbaijan “deep and brotherly”, noting that they would never be affected by short-lived events. He also stressed Iran’s support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, grandeur, progress and territorial unity.
Rasim Musabekov, an Azerbaijani MP and political analyst, told VK that Iran has certain fears over development of military and technical cooperation between Azerbaijan and Israel. The expert said that the meeting of Iranian, Azerbaijani and Turkish foreign ministers in Nakhchivan was held without Turkish attendance. Abiyev’s visit to Iran is to demonstrate that Azerbaijan is opposed to any conflict with Iran.
Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Russian Center for Socio-Political Studies, says that the risk of a military conflict with Iran has become clearer. There have been assassination attempts against Israeli diplomats in various states. Development of the Fordu nuclear facilities progresses. Exact dates of a military attack on Iran cannot be given at the moment, Yevseyev says, adding that development of missiles would encourage Iranian authorities to build nuclear weapons.
The exact day when the nuclear weapons are built is unknown. It will depend on certain conditions. Iran does not produce enough materials for nuclear tests at the moment, Yevseyev concludes.
