German foreign minister supports Azerbaijani democratic processes

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has held a press conference in Baku and expressed devotion to development of relations with Azerbaijan, Trend reports.

The German minister met his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov and discussed the situation in Syria, Iranian nuclear program and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Westerwelle called Azerbaijan a strategic partner of Germany with good ties in economy and energy. The two states are members of the UN Security Council, cooperate in essential international processes, such as the Syrian crisis and the Iranian nuclear program.

Germany supports a peaceful solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Westerwelle said commenting on the conflict. Stability is important for all states of the region.

The German foreign minister will visit Tbilisi within the framework of his tour in South Caucasus. He will discuss cooperation with the European Union, regional conflicts, bilateral cooperation in economy and energy and protection of human rights.

Westerwelle will meet Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze, former President Eduard Shavernadze and public figures. He will make a speech at the Tbilisi State University and comment on EU relations with South Caucasus. Then the minister will travel to Yerevan.

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said that the visit will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Germany. The latter was the first state to recognize Georgia as an independent state.
