US senators and the State Department believe that Georgia may speed up the process of joining NATO, but this requires respect for human rights and an end to pressure on the opposition, RIA Novosti reports.
Republican Senator Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire) said that Baltic states were very young members of NATO, granted membership for achievements in democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration. Georgia may achieve progress at the Chicago summit in late May. Its parliamentary polls in October will be a test for democracy, the senator said on Thursday.
The US administration offered Richard Norland, who worked in Uzbekistan, to become the ambassador to Georgia.
Shaheen reminded about Democrat Senator Benjamin Cardin (Maryland) saying that elections in Georgia were not very fair and clear. Some experts believed that elections could be passed to autumn.
