The first round of formal talks on a Georgian-EU agreement on a zone of deep and comprehensive free trade will take place in Tbilisi from 27 to 28 March, Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze announced today, News-Georgia reports.
Negotiations began in Tbilisi on February 28, during the visit of EU Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht, based on a decision accepted by the European Union on 5 December 2011.
The Agreement on Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade is part of the "Eastern Partnership" initiative.
The "Eastern Partnership" facilitates political and economic rapprochement between the EU and six post-Soviet states - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus. Participation in the "Eastern Partnership" does not include prospects of accession to the EU.
The official start of the program, proposed by the European Union on the initiative of Poland and Sweden, took place in Prague on 8 May 2009.
