US to cut Georgian financing for undemocratic elections

US Democrat Jim McDermott has introduced the act on Georgian democracy for 2012, proposing a cut for Georgian financing in 2013 if the elections in spring prove undemocratic, Vzglyad reports.

The project states President Mikheil Saakashvili's pressure on opposition, including billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Akaky Minashvili, a leader of the pro-presidential majority and head of the Georgian parliamentary commission for foreign affairs, said that the government will hold fair elections.

Levan Berdzenishvili, an opposition leader, said on Wednesday that the US will check spending of its financing on democratic institutions.

Richard Norland, soon to be appointed as US Ambassador to Georgia, said that strict control over spending of US finances on democracy in Georgia is needed.
