Assad and opposition cease fire

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and the opposition have fulfilled the UN’s demand to cease fire. Kofi Annan, special envoy of the UN and the Arab League (LAS), is the guarantor of the cease-fire agreement the sides reached. Military action in the country ended at 7 am (local time) on Thursday, Reuters reports.

Residents of the Homs, Ham and Idlib Provinces, which underwent numerous attacks of government forces say that no confrontation can be seen. Syrian forces remain at their positions, Gazeta.ru reports.

Annan called April 10 the deadline to realize his plan to settle the conflict. Then the terms shifted to April 12. The UN Security Council approved Annan’s plan on March 21. Annan said on Wednesday night that the group of observers monitoring fulfillment of the plan left Damascus. Annan has not clarified its next destination.

Vestnik Kavkaza reported earlier that the Syrian government announced cease-fire at 6 am on April 12, expecting the opposition to do the same. The regime has the right for proportional response to any armed terrorist groups against the population, state forces and private property.
