The world powers and Iran in Istanbul today held negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program in a "constructive atmosphere," Reuters reported, citing the statements of representatives of the European Union and Tehran.
"At the meeting, a constructive atmosphere was felt. We had a good sense of what the Iranians want to tackle," a representative of the EU Foreign Ministry, Michael Mann, said Saturday.
Representatives from Tehran were also satisfied with the results of the first round of negotiations. "I would say that useful work has been done this morning," a representative of the Iranian side said under condition of anonymity.
Representatives from six world powers - the United States, Russia, China, Germany, France and Britain - have met for the first time in 15 months with senior Iranian officials for negotiations on the nuclear program of Tehran.
The standoff around this problem threatens to cause a new war in the Middle East. Prior to the talks, diplomats claimed that the first round-table after a long break is unlikely to lead to serious breakthroughs, but it gives a chance to resume dialogue, and reduce the threat of military strikes by Israel, which is more than others afraid of the possibility of its arch-enemy's acquisition of nuclear weapons.
Iran's relations with Israel and the U.S. intensified after Tehran did not give IAEA inspectors access to its nuclear facilities.Several Western countries have accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons, although Tehran insists on the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not exclude a military strike against the Islamic republic. U.S. aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf are also alerted.
Istanbul negotiations have started today at noon Moscow time. Journalists are not present at them.
