The European Union is working on a 13th package of sanctions against Syria, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said, RIA Novosti reports.
The previous portion of sanctions was passed at the Council of EU Foreign Ministers on March 23. Ashton said that new sanctions will keep on coming until the repression in Syria stop.
Foreign ministers of 27 EU states expanded sanctions against Syria on March 23. They blacklisted 12 more officials, including President Bashar al-Assad’s mother Anisa Makhlouf and her husband Asmu Assad. Two companies were put on the blacklist.
The 12th package of sanctions bans their visits to EU states and freezes their accounts. The EU passed an embargo on shipments of weapons and police equipment to Syria. It also banned purchases of Syrian oil and investments in its petroleum industry. Accounts of the Syrian Central Bank were frozen.
Some 150 people had assets frozen and will not receive visas.
