France confirmed it will host a meeting of foreign ministers on Thursday, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to discuss the situation in Syria, where violence continued despite a ceasefire brokered by the Arab League and United Nations' envoy Kofi Annan, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The persistent violence in Syria and the hurdles set by the Syrian authorities fo r the United Nations observers pushed French Foreign Minister Alain Juppé to invite his fellow ministers to Paris to discuss the situation and "to send a strong message to Damascus and express support for Mr. Annan," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
"We will show our will to keep the political process on track," Mr. Juppé said.
As many as 14 foreign ministers from countries such as Germany, the US, Jordan, Morocco, Qatar and Saudi Arabia will attend the summit, foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said. The meeting is set to start at 16.00 GMT on Thursday.
