Georgia sets harsher punishments for domestic violence

Georgian Vice-Speaker of Parliament Rusudan Kervalishvili has initiated a new bill on punishing domestic violence, Vzglyad reports.

Abusing or beating family members will now be punished with 6 months or up to 3 years of prison. If such violations result in death of a family member, the punishment reaches 20 years.

Verbal abuses are punished with up to $300. Physical, moral, sexual or psychological violence will be punished with obligatory social work.

According to studies, 54% of under-aged people in Georgia are victims of physical domestic violence, and 7% of sexual violence.
