UN observers inspect Syrian Homs
A team of international observers have arrived in Syria to inspect the city of Homs, which recently served as the scene of an armed
confrontation between the opposition and government forces of President Bashar
al-Assad, RIA Novosti reports, referring to Reuters.
The first group of UN observers to monitor the ceasefire agreement arrived in Syria on April 15. At the moment the number of observers is expected to
increase to 30 people. There is a possibility that the mission will
amount to up to 300 people.
According to the plan of special envoy Kofi Annan on a resolution
of the situation in Syria, at the moment there is an official ceasefire
between the armed wing of the opposition and the troops of President Bashar
al-Assad. Kofi Annan's plan stipulates that the government as well as the
opposition must meet a number of obligations, in particular, the cessation of
armed violence by all parties under the effective control of a special UN
mechanism, provision of humanitarian assistance to the victims and
beginning of an inter-Syrian political dialogue. The proposals were
unanimously supported by the UN Security Council.
